Looking after the mental health of your team

Supporting the mental health of your staff is not only a compassionate approach but also contributes to a more productive and positive work environment.

Here are several ways to support the mental health of your employees:

  • Encourage employees to take regular breaks and use their annual leave.

  • Set reasonable working hours and discourage excessive overtime.

  • Support flexible work arrangements, when possible, to accommodate personal needs.

  1. Open Communication:

    • Foster an environment where employees feel comfortable discussing their mental health concerns.

    • Encourage managers to have regular one-on-one check-ins with their team members.

    • Provide channels for anonymous feedback or confidential support, such as an Employee Assistance Program (EAP).

  2. Mental Health Training:

    • Offer mental health awareness and resilience training for employees and managers.

    • Ensure that managers are trained to recognise signs of mental health issues and know how to respond appropriately.

  3. Reduce Stigma:

    • Raise awareness about mental health to reduce the stigma associated with it.

    • Share stories of employees who have overcome mental health challenges or have sought help.

  4. Flexible Policies:

    • Create policies that accommodate employees' mental health needs, such as allowing time off for therapy appointments.

    • Develop clear procedures for employees returning to work after a mental health-related absence.

  5. Access to Resources:

    • Provide information about mental health resources, such as local counseling services or helplines.

    • Offer access to an EAP that provides confidential counseling and support.

  6. Workload Management:

    • Ensure that workloads are manageable and equitable among team members.

    • Distribute tasks and responsibilities fairly to prevent burnout.

  7. Promote Physical Health:

    • Encourage regular physical activity and provide opportunities for exercise.

    • Promote healthy eating and share recipes on your intranet

  8. Create a Supportive Environment (If you have an office location):

    • If you have an office, design a workplace that fosters mental well-being, such as providing comfortable rest areas with natural light.

    • Encourage social interaction and team-building activities to build a sense of belonging.

  9. Recognise Achievements and Efforts:

    • Acknowledge and appreciate the hard work and accomplishments of your employees.

    • Regularly celebrate achievements and milestones to boost morale.

  10. Set Realistic Expectations:

    • Ensure that goals and expectations are realistic and achievable.

    • Avoid setting unattainable targets that can lead to stress and anxiety.

  11. Lead by Example:

    • As a leader, demonstrate the importance of work-life balance and self-care.

    • Share your own experiences with work-related stress and how you manage it.

  12. Seek Professional Help: Encourage employees to seek professional help when needed and provide information about available resources.

Every workplace is unique, so it's important to tailor your approach to the specific needs and culture of the business. Regularly check in with employees to gather feedback and make adjustments as necessary to better support their mental health
