5 things to know before saying ‘yes’ to a NDIS Plan extension/rollover.

It’s been an interesting few weeks in the world of NDIS plans. We are hearing that many of our clients are receiving what we call the ‘Golden’ letter from the NDIS.

So what is this ‘Golden’ letter?

To explain, this is the letter that says your plan has been assessed by the NDIS and if you are happy with it, then the NDIS ‘propose’ to continue your current plan for a further 12 months from the end date of your current plan.

Isn’t that a good thing?

It’s hard to answer this question, as every Participant's situation is unique.  If you are happy with your existing plan and nothing has changed with your circumstances, then yes, receiving this letter is a good thing.  If you aren’t happy with your existing plan, then you would contact the NDIS / LAC and request a plan review.

What should I do if I want to accept NDIS’s letter offering me a rollover/extension? Or if NDIA call me regarding my existing plan?

  1. We recommend that you should always respond to the NDIS plan extension letter/call in writing. Step out exactly what the plan contains such as the funding amount and the plan dates, so everyone is on the same page.

  2. If you get a call from the NDIA - the very first question to ask is  “ Is this a Plan Review? ”

  3. If it is a Plan Review, stop the conversation straight away and say “ I’m not available to talk right now, please put it in writing and I will get back to you “ or you may wish to arrange another mutually agreeable meeting time.

  4. Always make sure you get a record of any conversation in writing. Get a paper trail of what’s being said by who and when it was said (i.e. dates) so that you have proof if you need it later for a review. Processes are inconsistent and constantly changing.  NDIS terminology can be confusing and can get easily misconstrued.

  5. Never commit to anything on the spot. LAC’s don’t have any decision-making permission or the authority to implement a Plan rollover or extension.
