How to write a strong Carer Statement to help with NDIS funding and support.

Why do I need to write a Carer or Impact Statement?

Whilst it's not compulsory, we highly recommend our clients write a Carer (or Impact Statement) to help communicate to the NDIS the daily care and support required for the participant. This helps give the NDIS an accurate view of what’s required so they can work out what level of support is needed and the impact not having this support has on the Carers, families and siblings.

Who is allowed to write a Carer Statement?

Any family member or provider that supports and cares for a person with a disability can write a Carer Statement.

How long should a Carer Statement be?

We’d recommend keeping it brief and a maximum of two pages.

What do I need to include in my Carer Statement?

Firstly don’t hold back on what you include in your statement. Think about your ‘worst days’ when you really needed help and support. Whilst this can be a bit daunting, it's really important to include everything you can think of including the day to day struggles that impact your family life and your capacity to work.

Include morning and afternoon routines and the difficulties you are experiencing. Outline everything you do to help the person you are caring for, from when you wake up to when you fall into bed exhausted. 24/7.

Include how you feel, mental health impacts and the functional impact it's having on your day to day life. Give a clear description of how this significant and ongoing care affects you physically, emotionally, socially and financially

Include impacts on your relationships with other siblings and partners.

Include how it's impacting your ability to work full time/part-time/not at all.

Include how lack of support impacts all of the following categories:

  1. Home

  2. Health and Well-being

  3. Lifelong Learning

  4. Work

  5. Social and Community Participation

  6. Relationships

  7. Choice and control
